Hey friends,
My name is Courtney Williamson, and I am the Fall 2021 President of Texas Sweethearts. I joined Texas Sweethearts in Spring 20…during some wild and unexpected times....but I am glad I did. The first part of my semester in person was so exciting, and I had already encountered some amazing people who were making me even more excited to be a part of this organization. Even during the pandemic, I felt the community feeling from Sweethearts, and I am so thankful that I had become part of such a great group during all that was faced over the past year.
I am a 4th year Health and Society major pursuing a Pre-Health Professions Certificate and an African and African Diaspora studies minor, and I am from Flower Mound, Texas! I came to UT the untraditional route; I was a CAP (Coordinated Admissions Placement) student at the University of Texas at San Antonio, and then transferred into UT Austin my second year. During my senior year of highschool, I had applied to so many places, but when it came down to it, I knew I wanted to be at UT Austin. I felt this way because when I toured UT Austin, I could see myself here and I knew I wanted to be a Longhorn. I must confess, when I first came to UT Austin, I had no idea what a spirit group was or what they did. Luckily, one of my roommates had a friend in Texas Sweethearts, and she only spoke highly of it. I would see her post fun memories and talk about activities she had taken part in, and I wanted to be a part of that. I had gone to a school that had around 400 people in the entire highschool, and I was used to feeling close with a group of people and being in a small environment which definitely is not UT. In addition, I had participated in women’s sports teams since I was a child, so I was incredibly used to the feeling of sisterhood and being supported by a group of women, and I wanted that to be a part of my college experience! In Spring of 2020, I tried out, I got in, and I have grown every day because of it. Since I have been in Sweethearts, I have been on our organization’s board every semester, I have been the Diversity and Inclusion Chair for Fall 2020 and Spring 2021, and now President for Fall 2021, which I am so excited about.
For me, when I joined Texas Sweethearts, I not only came across a group of women who actually champion being diverse and inclusive, but also a group of people that will drive you to be the best you can be and support you wholeheartedly while doing it. I don’t think I would have met all of these great friends on my own, and so for that I am truly thankful. I love that I always have a group to do whatever with whether it be visiting the Alamo at midnight, having breakfast at Mount Bonnell, or watching Disney+ in my apartment, the friends I have made within Sweethearts are always down to spend time with me and/or lend a helping hand, and I am so grateful for that.
To all prospective members, I would encourage you to never be scared to try something new or different in college. I had no idea what a spirit group was 3 years ago and now I am the President of one. Do whatever your heart desires and what will bring more joy to your life. You only do undergrad once, do everything in your power to give you the most growing and fun experience you could wish for.
I am so excited for recruitment this Fall, and I cannot wait to meet you all.
Best wishes,
Courtney Williamson
Fall 2021 President
